You and your business don’t need to be perfect

Greening your small business

As ThisRock gets off the ground, I’m talking to friends, peers, and business owners. Just regular humans. We all have busy lives. Thinking about climate change and global warming is gloomy. It requires our brains and our time. It’s a hill many people don’t want to climb.

My advice to the businesses-owners and humans out there:

  • If you want to take a step forward to being a greener business, now is the time. You won’t be perfect at it. It’s good. It’s fine actually. One step at a time is the way to go.
  • Yes, greenwashing is a thing. Some businesses do it. Yours wont. I realize its a worry that if you only green 1-2 things in your business or value chain, other parts might still be adding to your carbon footprint. Guess what: that is going to happen. It’s a process. The difference between your business and businesses that greenwash is that you will sincerely care about your impact.
  • Make room to fund 1-2 initiatives in your budget. If done correctly, they will positively impact your profitability through goodwill, efficiency, sourcing more locally, etc.
  • The winning brands and businesses 5 years from now will be the ones that are conscious and sustainable. Customers will demand it.

Greening your business is a one-day-at-a-time thing. Don’t worry about being perfect at it right away. Just start.
