Elon Musk is a polarizing figure, known for his rocket-scale innovations and ambitious visions for the future, yet frequently called out for controversial comments and unconventional tactics. Whether you admire or question him, Musk’s influence on sectors like energy, transport, and space is hard to ignore.

But when it comes to this topic, what does Elon Musk really think about climate change?

How does he suggest we tackle this global crisis? And maybe the most important question: Can we learn anything from his approach?

I’m Lindsay Hampson, President of ThisRock Inc., a sustainability consulting firm that helps businesses reduce emissions, adopt sustainable practices, and meet ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) standards.

As someone who works in this field every day, I’ve always been intrigued by Musk’s perspective on climate change. While I don’t agree with everything he says or does, his influence is too big to ignore.

This blog (alongside the YouTube video) explores Musk’s views, what he believes, what he pushes back on, and what we might learn from his approach. Whether you agree with him or not, his ideas demand attention.

Does Elon Musk Believe in Climate Change?

Let’s start with the basics: Yes, Elon Musk firmly believes that climate change is real, pressing, and something we can solve.

He’s consistently called for action on rising CO2 levels, once famously saying:
“We are running the most dangerous experiment in history, which is to see how much carbon dioxide the atmosphere can handle.”

Musk’s solutions center on technology and scalability. He doesn’t just want to reduce emissions; he wants to transform entire industries. Here’s how:

  • Tesla and Electric Vehicles (EVs):
Tesla revolutionized the automotive industry, making EVs mainstream and pushing other automakers to accelerate their own EV development. Today, EVs are a cornerstone of reducing transportation-related emissions.
  • SolarCity and Renewable Energy:
As the co-founder of SolarCity (now part of Tesla), Musk aimed to make solar energy accessible and affordable, furthering the shift away from fossil fuels.
  • The $100 Million XPrize for Carbon Removal:
Musk launched this initiative to fund innovative technologies that remove CO2 from the atmosphere, targeting scalable solutions that could operate at gigaton levels. (Learn more about XPrize here).

For Musk, the answer to climate change boils down to three principles:

  1. Electrify everything.
  2. Power it with clean energy.
  3. Innovate scalable solutions.

Calling BS on Ineffective Climate Solutions

Now we know what Elon Musk really thinks about climate change, we can look into aspects he disagrees with. Musk isn’t afraid to challenge conventional thinking, especially when it comes to solutions he believes don’t address the core problem. Here are two areas where he has voiced skepticism:

1. Carbon Offsets

Carbon offsets let companies balance their emissions by funding projects like tree planting or renewables. While popular, Musk often calls them “feel-good solutions” that dodge the core problem: cutting emissions at the source.

Instead, he advocates for technologies that actively remove CO2 from the atmosphere. His investment in the XPrize reflects this belief, as he aims to incentivize innovation in carbon capture.

2. Small Personal Actions

Musk has also questioned whether small personal sacrifices like unplugging devices or cutting back on meat, will significantly impact climate change. His view is that systemic changes are far more effective:

  • Transitioning to renewable energy.
  • Electrifying transportation and industry.
  • Scaling up carbon removal technologies.

In his words:
“The biggest impact comes from systematic changes, not micromanaging daily habits.”

While I understand Musk’s focus on large-scale solutions, this is one area where I respectfully disagree.

Where I Agree, and Push Back

As a sustainability consultant, I agree with Musk on several points:

1. Systemic Change is Key

Large-scale solutions like electrification and renewable energy adoption are critical. Businesses have the power to implement changes that can reduce emissions on a massive scale, and technologies like EVs and solar power are central to this transition.

2. Technology Drives Progress

Musk’s emphasis on innovation is spot-on. Technologies that make clean energy more affordable and accessible can accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future.

But here’s where I push back:

3. The Power of Individual Actions

While systemic change is essential, individual actions play a vital role in driving momentum for broader change. In my work with businesses, I’ve seen how small, intentional choices, like adopting EVs, reducing waste, or starting conversations about sustainability, create a ripple effect.

People don’t just change their own behavior; they inspire others to do the same. This influence matters, and it builds the cultural and political support needed to implement systemic solutions.

What Can We Learn from Musk’s Perspective?

After researching his views, we know what Elon Musk really thinks about climate change. Here are three key takeaways:

1. Adopt Clean Technology

If you can, make the switch to sustainable options like EVs, solar panels, or battery storage. These investments can reduce your carbon footprint and often save money over time.

2. Support Scalable Solutions

Back companies and policies that prioritize innovation. For example:

  • Businesses adopting clean energy can significantly reduce emissions.
  • Governments funding research into renewable technologies can drive global progress.

3. Combine Technology with Action

Your choices, how you power your home, what you drive, and how your business operates, send a signal that drives change. As a bonus, many sustainable choices can reduce costs or even boost revenue.

Does Musk Ignore Natural Climate Cycles?

One common argument against human-caused climate change is that Earth has experienced natural warming and cooling cycles (like ice ages) in the past. While Musk hasn’t explicitly addressed this in-depth, his actions make it clear that he sees human activity as the primary driver of today’s warming.

Scientists overwhelmingly agree that the current rate of warming is unprecedented and directly linked to emissions from fossil fuel use. Musk’s focus on reducing these emissions through technology aligns with this scientific consensus.

Musk’s Bold and Controversial Vision

Elon Musk’s approach to climate change is bold, controversial, and deeply rooted in technology and innovation. He believes the path forward lies in scalable solutions that transform industries, not in micromanaging individual behaviors.

While I disagree with his dismissal of personal actions, I appreciate his commitment to addressing the climate crisis head-on. Ultimately, tackling climate change requires a combination of systemic changes and everyday actions that build momentum for a sustainable future.
